Whew, what a powerful character Joan of Arc was! I felt some obvious uneasiness as I read of her hearing voices and angels, but in honesty I became quite convinced that she really was called of God for her time. She was ever careful to put God first and to give all the glory to His name. If she had gone for personal gain, she could have had it. If she had gone out of delusion, the success she led France to would have been humanly impossible.
Some of the editions list this as a novel. By checking a number of sources, it appears that everything strictly pertaining to Joan herself is carefully researched and historical...the only fiction seems to be of the narrator who stays at her side from the earliest days, but who is a pretty unintrusive narrator. It was a great refresher on a little-remembered portion of history for me, and it got me flipping to other sources to see how much was true.
