A book of two journeys in the early 1960s to Lapland - which is the north of Norway, Sweden and Finland if in doubt. It is an interesting book, but not that interesting, only because when dealing with Lapland, there is a lot of same and not a whole lot of different.
It sounds an amazingly scenic place, unspoilt my mankind, and populated only by the Lapp, many of whom are nomadic.
The author is pretty hardcore when it comes to travel commitment. A lot of walking in difficult conditions - cold and rain mostly, and with river crossings, sleeping out rough and not having any food, he sticks at it for a long enough time to cover a whole lot of ground.
The first journey is along the Kungsleden, the Kings Trail, from Ammarnas along the mountainous spine of Swedish Lapland to Abisko.
The second is a massive loop through Lapland and is summarised in the last paragraph in the book “From Jokkmokk to Harapanda I travelled 30 miles by train, 495 by bus, 115 by boat, 350 by ship, 405 by car or lorry, and 447 on foot.” Some 1840 miles, this is the summary of the second trip (which if he had gone direct would have been only 164 miles.
