Jack Tarelli is a private investigator on the planet Amber. Amber has week long nights and week long days. It's a perfect setting for a dark and somber detective story and author Corey McCullough provides that story.
Tarelli is a former cop who was accused of killing his wife. Amber is virtually under the thumb of a criminal syndicate. The son of the one industrialist who is standing in the way of the syndicate is killed and the industrialist calls in Jack to find some answers.
The story is filled with noir cliches. The police barely tolerate Jack; Jack is cynical about the competence of the police. The industrialist's daughter is a conniving ditz. Drop Phil Marlowe in here and you could be aiming for a remake of The Long Goodbye.
But this is a different world. There are robots and energy weapons and surprises along the way. I fell for some of the red-herrings dragged along the trail.
I enjoyed the story and I look forward to the sequel.
