i originally gave this 3 stars but after discussing it on the literally dead book club & the troop liveshows i realized how literally nothing in this book connected. also this tried to make this toxic, crazy romance and they barely did anything crazy. like baby this is nothing 😭 i will say it kept me engaged and interested the entire time tho
I should have trusted the low reviews. This was so surprising because I have LOVED all of Samantha Downing's books. This was nothing like the others, I kept thinking it was written by a ghostwriter. All of the characters were unlikeable. The characters made dumb decisions, and the “romance” plot was awful. I didn't like how the perspective would just randomly change in the middle of the chapter, and there were so many minor characters with pointless side plots. Hated the detective perspective, and it went nowhere. the whole obsession Karen had about finding out what happened to a car years ago was so stupid. It made no sense. At the end of the book all of these random side characters and thinly laid plots came out, and I had no idea what was going on and didn't care. I'm just so disappointed at this flop.
We all know couples like Wes and Ivy – always breaking up, always getting back together, toxic yet desperately in love, they can't keep their hands off each other, yet seem destined to make each other miserable. They manipulate each other, stab each other in the back, torture the other until they're at the breaking point, yet somehow always wind up back in each other's arms. We watch them in fascination, one part of us envious of such an all-consuming passion, the other repulsed by how miserable they make each other. The unhealthy dynamic plays out, complete with secrets, lies, and murder and while it may be mesmerizing, I wouldn't wish this type of love on anyone. Downing leads us down the garden path, then rips the story apart. If you're a fan of whack-a-do relationships and fabulous obsessions, this book was meant for you.
