In the second volume, I knew better what to expect, and I wasn't expecting much. It compiles one-shot issues, starring Robyn, Mercy, and surprisingly, the Dark One. The latter two had a bit of continuity. With less issues in this volume, it felt a bit more streamlined to read through.

Unlike the first volume, which presents events that occur as the Dark Queen kicks off the Age of Darkness, this volume is about backstories. The timeline is a bit muddy here, as you can't really be sure whether these are happening before or during the Age of Darkness.

The artwork is what you'd expect from Zenescope. The story, given that they are backstories, are not very interesting actually - somewhat cliched. A hero was a dark secret, a reluctant bargain and then a betrayal, and a villain with a soft spot. If you haven't read any of these characters before this, definitely don't start here.
