The author demonstrates the strange chemistry which results from the meeting of outward image with reality- not only for Olive and her brother but for the retired sea captain, the Eurasian adventuress, the young man from the pierrot show and the beautiful Mrs Brenner. The town can never be the same again after the summer of 1913, and even for the children it assumes a new perspective as they view it down the years.
