A fully illustrated, full color children's book in Hiligaynon. The story is a translation of The Mountain That Loved A Bird by Alice McLerran, originally published in the United States with illustrations by Eric Carle. The translation from English to Hiligaynon is by Genevieve L. Asenjo; the full color illustrations are by Beaulah Pedregosa Taguiwalo, drawn from the landscapes of the Philippines. It is published by Mother Tongue Publishing Inc., a Manila-based company that aims to publish books in as many languages as possible.
Hiligaynon is an Austronesian language that is mostly spoken in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines, particularly in the provinces of Iloilo and Negros Occidental. It is also spoken in the other provinces of the Panay Island group such as Capiz, Antique, Aklan, and Guimaras, and in many parts of Mindanao like Koronadal City, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and many parts of North Cotabato. There are approximately 7,000,000 people in and outside the Philippines who are native speakers of Hiligaynon, and an additional 4,000,000 who are capable of speaking it with a substantial degree of proficiency. It is a member of the Visayan language family.
This book is also available in Kinaray-a, Iloko, Cebuano, and Filipino.
