I read this book back in elementary school, younger than the protagonist. It was such an important book for me back when I first read it? Maybe I thought of it as some holy text for a month or so–which is relatively long for that time. I wondered if the breast-enhancing exercises were real or if the experience with boys (so outdated though. Spin the bottle??). It was just this fascinating look into what “big girls'” lives were like to me.
But it's also so much more now. It tackles female friendships, identity confusion, and religious tension all in the microcosm of a twelve-year old's life. And boy, it makes getting your period sound exciting which is something I don't feel at all now. I think I owe a lot to this book and how it handled womanhood. I'm not God, Margaret, but I'm listening.
