Away in a manger

It's Christmastime in 1905 New York City. Molly Murphy Sullivan and the children are listening to carolers in the street when they discover a beggar girl and her brother huddled in a doorway. Well-spoken and clearly used to better things, these are not the usual city waifs. Who are they? And what's happened to their mother?
