Wow! Finally, I read this book! I have been hearing people talk about this book for the longest time and about this crazy ending and now I am psyched to be in the loop, to know what everyone is talking about! I am actually watching the show now with my husband and really enjoying it but I am glad that I read the book first because I was entertained to say the least. I wouldn't say that it's my favorite domestic thriller of all time but it definitely delivers on the mindfuck aspect! That is for sure! This twist was something akin to the twist in The Silent Patient but even crazier and more out there! Definitely will be reading more from this new to me author in the future.
To begin with, Behind Her Eyes is about a single mom, named Louise, who has a passionate night with a stranger at a bar and then realizes the next day that this stranger is her new boss and is also married to a beautiful woman named Adele. Their lives intertwine and head in a direction that almost no-one can possibly see coming. I have never read a domestic thriller quite like this and was definitely intrigued from the very beginning. There is a trope in this book that is very new to me and I thoroughly enjoyed it, even though I have no other previous books to compare it to and see if it was done well. I thought the book started off very strong and it got my attention but the middle dragged a bit for me and that's where I started losing interest and hoping to get to the mind blowing ending soon, that everyone kept talking about. Unfortunately, it took until the very end to get to that mind-blowing ending and all the action was saved for the very conclusion as well. For this reason, I gave this book four stars and not five.
Further on, the characterization in this book was pretty good, nothing I can complain about. I liked getting to know all the characters and their complicated backgrounds and figuring out what made them the way that they are and the way that they relate to one another. I just wish we could have gotten to the very dark, sinful stuff a little earlier because it felt like it took forever to really show us who these people really were, at their very rotten cores and souls. I do applaud the author for not being afraid to go there though and to show us how humans really are, without sugarcoating or hiding anything.
Finally, the writing style is one that I had no problem with. It wasn't the most intricate or beautiful writing I've ever read but it got the story across without a hitch and the pages didn't stop turning until the very last page. There were a few awkward thoughts and sentences but those were very few and didn't take away from the overall story and reading experience.
In conclusion, I enjoyed this domestic thriller very much and would recommend it to anyone that wants to have their mind blown by a twist or twists that they didn't see coming. I wouldn't say it's rooted in reality but if you're willing to suspend your reality for a bit, this book could really wow you in many ways. It could have definitely been shortened a bit in order to pack more of a punch throughout the whole book itself, nonetheless, it's a book I will probably think about for years to come. Definitely recommend but with a grain of salt because it might not be for absolutely everyone.
Last ~10 pages made this go from a 3 to a 3.5 star...... but wtf..... I can't tell if I enjoyed this or not? Like it was entertaining but also. ???????? :-
The only thing that kinda didn't work out for me is the paranormal part, I didn't expect that in this book.
But I liked it, took me by surprise
I never would have thought the book would have ended like that. It kept my attention and I would definitely recommend this book.
4.5 i had to sit on my rating for a bit but this was the craziest ending of a book i have ever read
Wow! WoW! WOW! what an ending. I was happy enough through out the book, but the ending just floored me
“Some love is so powerful it sweeps everything else away.”
Unpredictable/unexpected endings are very difficult to pull off these days due to the presence of so many books, shows and movies with weird plot twists as a result of which people are able imagine every possible scenario, come up with all sorts of theories as to what's going to happen and comfortably predict the ending. Behind Her Eyes also seemed set to face the same predicament but took a complete U-Turn that led to an absolute shocker of an ending. Unfortunately, other than the ending the story had nothing else worth noting, was very predictable and doesn't offer much different from what we have seen in similar plots.
The ending, despite being incredulous and jaw dropping at its own is a disappointment when it comes to the overall impact on story and logic. The book strays from the path of other psychological thriller storylines due to a paranormal trope added which removes the need for some logical explanation in some parts but that ending? No paranormal or fantasy trope can explain the stupidity of what happened there. It just completely ignores previously set up events and logic like it's nothing.
There are 3 main characters in the book: Louise, David and Adele. I didn't like Louise that much I thought she was just a clueless horror movie character that makes stupid choices but the other 2 were good. The mystery surrounding the couple of David and Adele is what intrigued me the most.
I enjoyed this book no doubt, it had my interest the whole time. Thought a lot of the situations in the book could have been much scarier & the third act a bit extended and not rushed. Also really liked the idea of introducing paranormal trope to this plot. But the real question is, was the brave and bold decision of having an ending that is so senseless and absurd that it will have a drastic effect on the story and logic worth it? Turns out it just was as I hadn't been so aghast by an ending for a long time.
Incredibly unsure if I actually enjoyed this book or not. The twist is so unbelievable but I don't think I mind that. It was a good twist with a hint of sci-fi. I think it's just the sadness and lack of closure.
ARGH!! I feel completely let down by this book. I knew going in that it had a “WTF” ending as it had been promoted as that but I wasn't expecting THAT final chapter. Ugh.
The majority of the book was fast paced, compelling and just the kind of twisty drama I signed up for. You're following two women - one the wife and one the mistress - and how their lives and relationships with the man intertwine. You start to unravel the marriage and start to see how unstable the wife is but you assume it's the usual reaction to finding out her husband is having an affair.
Then the hints start to be dropped. I was intrigued by the notebook and the change in sleeping patterns so I naturally started to wonder where this was leading, I even started to think it could be what it turned out to be (trying very hard not to spoil anything here!) but then I finished it and I literally facepalmed. I could have dealt with the first “twist” at the end and it would have been weird but still a 3-4 star book but then that final chapter happened and it was too far. It was just so unnecessary!
4.5 stars! I'm not even sure what to say about that ending. There's the shocking ending and then there's THE PLOT TWIST directly following the shocking ending and it was a lot to take in at once. I did not expect the plot to take it a step further after that first curveball. My jaw is still on the floor! I decided to read this book because I heard that it had a crazy twist at the end and it did not disappoint! I'm amused, disturbed, and rethinking everything I've read. It's one of those endings
I just finished Behind Her eyes by Sarah Pinborough, all because of the netflix show... Here are my musings.
Louise is a single mom and doesn't spend a lot of time doing things for herself until one night, she meets a man in a bar. They kiss, the kind of earth shattering connection that makes you weak at the knees. Trouble is when she arrives at work the next day to find out he is her new boss... and he is married.
The attraction is palatable and although David and Adele's marriage looks perfect on the outside, something is very wrong between them. As she becomes closer to. David and Adele, she can't help digging into their lives and she has no idea the lengths a person will go to protect their marriage.
I saw the limited series on Netflix and had no idea it was a book and me being me.. I had to check it out! The book follows the tv show pretty closely so hats off for that but the book was better. I felt I understood the how, who and the why thanks to the book!
Louise is your average single mom and she can't help falling for David. You want to hate David for cheating but without spoiling anything, you will see the why by the end!
There are so many things I want to say but I don't want to spoil it! It is so good! The ending, even though I already knew, still felt like a shock! You won't see it coming and this book is my kind of psychological thriller! It wasn't as fast faced as I like my thrillers normally, but it packs a wallop in the best kind of ways!
I loved it. It's got some really excellent elements to it and I am jumping up and down urging you to read it.
5 million stars!!! Excellent writing! Utter genius.

So... I have just read “Behind her eyes”... And I don't know how to process this at almost 1 a.m. I am almost sure I will write a review on this book soon, which is not what I usually do (and I want to fix it for sure)! But this book has broken me and left me speechless. Definitely one of my favorite books of the year!
This book was bat-shit crazy and had me confused most of the time. Like the overall plot was a typical thriller but the big twist and even bigger twist were just insane. Also there was no one to root for as the main character was very unlikeable and just made the stupidest, unrealistic decisions.

I think everyone's opinion of this book hinges on whether you like the paranormal element in it. I was super let down by that part. I was expecting some very obsessive stalker behavior that was intricately woven into the story, and I was interested in how it would all fit together. The scheming falls flat for me when the character is simply able to watch every conversation and know every little thing because Random Paranormal Element. Once it was revealed I thought, “Oh, yeah, that would do it. Guess she isn't a mastermind with a ton of skill.” I was instantly less impressed and a little bored. EDIT: As time has passed, my thoughts have gone from ‘well that's kind of dumb' to ‘ugh that book was so stupid' when someone mentions it.
Since everything else only happens because of the paranormal element, I wish it had a way better explanation than “lucid dreaming, but more” to make me believe it. I like there to be a more exploration of magical elements, and this book absolutely doesn't provide that at all. If the author doesn't give at least a sentence or two of explanation (even a vague explanation or just the characters being like “wtf”), I'm not convinced they fully understand their own world.
For me, the fun part about a thriller is guessing the twist, but not too soon and not feeling completely convinced I've actually figured it out, and feeling that super satisfied by the process. This book was just nonsense at the end and the final twist had basically no hints that could help you figure it out. It belongs with the lame ‘and it was all a dream' kind of reveal.
What started as a typical thriller turned into a ‘What the hell??' moment. Loved the two viewpoint chapter writing. But the ending??? Definitely a memorable read.
Yo. This book StReSsEd Me OuT BrO. Honestly this had some serious ‘Gone Girl' vibes but I think the execution was even better. You think you know what is happening until the very and then literally the last 10 pages, it all gets turned on its head. It made me question everything that I read before. Like if I went back I could have analyzed each character trait and behavior so differently and picked up on subtle things. As someone who reads a lot of Psych thrillers... this was fantastic. READ IT FOR BOOKCLUB and then discuss the madness with wine and cheese. Ugh, so good! Will be exploring more of this author for sure!
The only reason this got two stars is because of the last chapter. It was the ONLY thing I didn't see ahead of time in this very long, frustrating, predictable book.
