Cute Book, Subtle Yet Important Messages
This book is cute in both concept and art. It has a brief, and slightly rushed, plot which teaches lessons in a subtle way. The main character learns to appreciate what he can do rather than lamenting what he can't and doesn't magically start being able to do it once he grows confidence. I think that's the part I enjoyed most, since it doesn't feel as patronizing as the “and suddenly they can do everything they once couldn't” message of some children's books. Instead, friends provide assistance and the power of kindness is explored.
I thought this book was a bit rushed and some places made the text difficult to read, but overall I did like it and I think it'd make an excellent bedtime story.
Bernard isn't like other birds. Try as he might, his wings are very long, and he can't fly. Bernard is despondent until he runs across a sad orangutan, and he discovers the usefulness of very long wings. Soon, everyone else does, too, and what was a difficulty becomes an asset.
A picture book about adjusting your point of view and using creativity to find happiness.
