Thoroughly enjoyed reading through this story about a young Huguenot couple in the 1760s in France. It isn't an easy read. It's sobering to realize how ready “enlightened” cultures can be to oppress, enslave, and murder those who are different from themselves. It's based on the true-life story of Jean Fabre, “last of the galley-slaves,” and details how he came to be consigned to a galley. It's intense and it seems like there's no way it can end well.
