Dragon book! And holy shit that is a hell of a book, that was so much and awesome. I want more from this world, but I feel like it was finished so well in this one.
This is closer to 4.5 stars. Way better than I initially expected! Really enjoyed it. The characters and themes were really good. Expected nothing less from Patrick ☺️
—audiobook notes—
• A Russian dragon appears and a racist deputy asks it, “Are you a communist?” And I'm like wtf man!
• omg I got scared for a minute. Patrick wouldn't kill a character I like so soon.
• Ok this world has dragons and humans decided they were bad and fought wars against them. Wow morons!
• Ah yeah! First gay couple in the making! Go Patrick goooo!
• Aha I figured out who the Materatheya was one chapter before it happened
I really loved this! I couldn't stop reading it. The characters were so complex and fully realized. The plot was brilliant and unpredictable. I was particularly impressed with the way it handled the major plot point in the middle. A change that significant can be hard to pull off, but this book did without losing momentum.
As a book about racism, inequality, prejudice, and police brutality it struck as particularly powerful in this current moment.
Fully recommend
There was a lot going on with the setting and fantasy combination. A bit too much for me and a bit too all over the place.
i've loved every book i've read by patrick ness and this one was no different
though this book took place in 1957 a lot of the topics that are covered are still relevant today, especially the treatment of minorities by police and other people in power.
