This is my first time reading a romance novel and i'm so glad it was a queer one. The connection Elio and Oliver share is described in a way that makes the reader yearn for that kind of love too. Their love like all non heteronormative relationships seemed to be an act of rebellion especially when being gay was not socially accepted. Without the understanding that Elio is pressured by society to love a woman it is hard to truly connect with how deeply he feels for Oliver. In his flings with women you can feel how mechanical and forced it was to love them but with Oliver his feelings and desires were genuine and deep down you understand those feelings to be reciprocated but Oliver is mature enough to understand The extent of the societal consequences if he were to be with Elio. The mere fact that Elio accepts this reality but still feels so intensely is a testament to how mature Elio has become and how heartbreaking yearning for love you may never have is.
