Children were being murdered -- and all had the same odd markings that mysteriously appeared on her own skin.…Since then, she's learned to read, she's learned to fight and she's become one of the vaunted Hawks who patrol and police the City of Elantra. Alongside the winged Aerians and the immortal Barrani, she's made a place for herself, far from the mean streets of her birth. But children are once again dying, and a dark and familiar pattern is emerging. Kaylin is ordered back into Nightshade with a partner she knows she can't trust, a Dragon lord for a companion and a device to contain her powers -- powers that no other human has. Kaylin Neya left the streets of Nightshade 7 years ago, and never looked back. She trained hard to become a Hawk, policing the city of Elantra. She loves being a Hawk, and never wants to go back to the fiefs. When she left all those years ago, children were being killed. She had to escape that life. She did, but not the same. She bears mysterious markings on her body and has no idea what they mean. Now, 7 years later, the killings have started again. She will do whatever it takes to stop the killer or killers targeting the children. This has been on my TBR list for quite a while. I loved it!! The world created here is fascinating and full of magic. I love the characters as well. I should have read this a long time ago, but at least now I don't have to wait for the next book to come out!!
A completely different universe with different breeds of characters, literally. The main character has power she has no idea about and this book takes her through the discovery of what she is and what her power can do. Not much was given away in regards to that power or the darkness she is facing. The most complicated character was that of Nightshade. I'm curious about the whole world but it didn't draw me in as much as I had hoped it would. More detailed information about the world would have been better but I guess we'll get more in subsequent books.
