The wordbuilding was so fascinating. The idea that they had to feed off from different gender of their own kinds and not from humans was brilliant. Must be suck for the gays.
I like Beth. Butch and Marrissa were just so cute! The brothers. Arghh! I like their bantering and Zsadist intrigued me. But the whole leather jackets and leather pants and sunglasses things were just not for me. And the brothers names, hah! Oh well, guess i just have suck it up.
P/s: i really wished it wasn't an erotica. Can't handle all those sexy scenes very well.
DNF @ 75 pages. The stupid names of the characters and all the ridiculous powers these “vampires” have is hard to get through. I have no idea how this is such a popular series.
Finally reading this awesome series!
I'm late to the party on the Black Dagger Brotherhood but I'm really happy to report that it lives up to the hype. I really enjoyed this introduction to the BDB universe through Beth and Wrath. I can't wait to see what happens next!
OK. I would have given this 3 stars except 1) the stupid, stupid character names (vamps names are Wrath, Tohrment, Rhage, Vishous - omg.) and 2) the really bad dialogue among the “manly” vamps, e.g. “Yo!”, “True.” “I'm feeling you” etc. These 2 things, which appear on every page of the book, make me cringe. But other than that, it's an average quality romance novel featuring vampire royalty and assassins, a mysterious “Omega” character, and a scribe virgin. I am interested to see how the vampire culture and history emerge and what happens with the rest of the characters who were introduced in this book (and especially the 2 vampire marriages) so I will keep reading the series, and hope she tones down the ridiculousness a bit.
4/5 stars
I really enjoyed my time reading this even tho it is a bit cheesy. I would definitely recommend if you want a classic paranormal romance.
This was an excellent book. I'm so glad I was finally convinced to start reading it. I love the world that is created. It is original and a bit different lore to the vampire story.
Loved it! The story pulled me right in from the beginning. Narration was a bit off but still good, what threw me off was that at times you had very long pauses between chapters, at other times the narrator barely took a breath between chapters, so a very uneven narration, but still very good, eventhough he doesn't really give the characters their own voices I really enjoyed it. Can't wait to start book 2.
I have been reading books in this style of writing for a very long time this has to be one of My Favorites.
What the hell did I just read? That's what I get for trying to do a horror month for Halloween and getting sucked in by the constant adverts on Goodreads.
Others may enjoy this, but it is definitely NOT my cup of tea.
It's OK.
I'm bothered by the “police logic”.
There's not a shred of valid evidence tying Wrath to the murders, but still they treat him as if he wasn't only the suspect but the murderer.
A girl goes to a date with a suspect and she is accused of “aiding and abetting”. Excuse me, in what crime?
The names are ridiculous. I keep reading “P-hury” and “Toh-R”
The descriptions are ridiculous. I keep seeing Tom of Finland's leather men :-D So of course they would have table manners and go all googoo gaga over the kitty :-D And they are all trying to talk so tough and be so cool it's just silly. And a little irritating.
Also, Beth's name was Elizabeth, but she was never called that. She was called Beth.
I read this book years ago. But recently decided to re-read it when I came across the audio version. I had stopped reading the series around book 8 mostly because of the violence level, but had been looking at the books on my shelf thinking that I should try the series again. Since it's been so many years since I read them, I wanted to start fresh.
Dark Lover is the start of this series and therefore there is a lot of set up going on. We have to learn about these vampires and their world, who the Lessers and Black Dagger Brotherhood are, and start the story arc. Ms Ward starts her series by telling the love story of the king of the Vampires, Wrath. It's not the most detailed of romances because of all the set up happening, but my emotions were engaged enough that I didn't care.
Ultimately, I think what holds this book back from being a 5 star read is the violence. I don't mind a little violence in a paranormal book... it's almost expected. But it was just a little too graphic for my taste. I could have done with a little less of those descriptions and a touch more on the romance between Wrath and Beth.
But in the end, it's a very solid start to a very popular and interesting series.
2.5
enjoyable to a point. usually a book like this should take me 1 sitting to finish but my godddd i had to walk away and come back with this one. i'd say the book stays interesting until 65% in, then it changes pace and moves too fast.
also sorry but they were TOO in love. it's been maybe 2 weeks. three tops. relax. a romance like theirs should've been more of a slow burn, especially because this is book one of a series.
i really wanted to like this, and maybe i'll read the next two just because there was enough sprinkles of zsadist that i'm curious now. but god i hate their names.
edit 1/23/23 changed from 2 to 2.5
I would say this book is sexy... well, Sylvia Day's Crossfire is vulgar & steamy but not supported by the power of the plot & background story. Richelle Mead's Georgina Kincaid is steamy, I kinda like the funny & sarcasm in it. But the dark lover is sexy without vulgar & steamy. Man, I can't explain for detail but I like it.
