Darkling

I wanted something to read for Halloween that wasn't too long and that I could get done over a couple of days, so I picked this one up, thinking the premise was rather fitting for a Halloween read and I wasn't disappointed. It isn't crazy scary and is more of a Gothic romance, but that is a genre I very much enjoy and Darkling hit all the marks on being both creepy and yet somehow emotional. It really is at its heart a story about grief, with the fantastical elements bring to the forefront themes about loss, love and death. I was both captured by the fantastical side of it, as well as its message and have been thinking about it long after I finished the last page, which truly means it hit a cord with me. The story could easily have been all about the romance or all about the ghost story, but it was SO much more than that and I truly appreciated that aspect. I highly recommend it!
