This felt like a hard boiled detective novel with a woman detective. It is grittier than I expected. However, the mystery is twisty and the main character is compelling.
Lou is a strong, brave and capable woman. The murders feel personal and the murderer is very dangerous. Lou won't settle until it is solved though.
The setting of Harlem in the 1920's adds to the gritty feeling of the book. Lou fits in very well with the setting.
This is a raw compelling mystery. It is not graphic, but it is gritty.
