Dolly is a delight. I didn't realize how prolific a songwriter she is. I also liked that the audio version (and frankly, there's no reason to approach this in text format, you'd definitely be losing out) includes snippets of the songs being discussed. However, this isn't really a book, more of a long-form NPR interview. It's just Dolly telling stories about her songs and her life in a stream of consciousness narrative loosely structured with 3rd party narration.
I thought I would fly through this audiobook in a few days, as it's only five hours. But it didn't hold my attention and I didn't feel like listening in the morning. I'm not a huge Dolly fan, but I know her standard songs. I did enjoy hearing how she writes and the stories behind songs.
It was a lot like listening to an interview. Dolly just talked like it was a conversation and not reading her book. Some of her phases got repetitive.
I would like to visit east TN, go to Dollywood, and just be in the area that made Dolly Parton. So she inspired me to want that!
definitely recommend listening to the audiobook! i assume the audio was recorded & the physical book is just a transcription of it based off how it sounds like she's just talking stream of consciousness, i think reading it would feel very flat compared to hearing her speak about her life & songs
