The protagonist is Carmen Ramirez, a 24-year-old lesbian who works as a reporter on a newspaper in Oklahoma. The plot concerns a lesbian teacher who molested and killed a 12-year-old girl, then committed suicide. But did she really do it? On her own, Carmen sets out to discover the truth, risking her job and her life in the process.
