A complex tale of being behind the front lines of WW1, filled with war tales that wring the heartstrings and with the narrator's own personal troubles. Mary O'Malley writes a journal of her travels and heartaches, addressing herself to the beloved guardian whom she could tell anything, but who fell early in the war years.
It's quite good, with a perfectly satisfying ending, but I don't agree with the theology. Though Mary claims to be a Protestant and prays, she believes firmly in reincarnation and thinks her guardian may still be able to watch her actions. Thus, not a full five stars.
