There just couldn't be any other rating. The story more than deserves it.
Finally, a couple of days after finishing this book, I'm ready to write a review.
At first, as I was a bit scared to get into Shadow of the Wind. Firstly, it was first published in 2001. I really thought that the plot of the book would be familiar to me, that I've already somewhere seen it, read it, hated it. Little did I know. Secondly, a lot of people really love this book, and I feared that maybe I set my expectation for it way too high. Such an awesome thing, when what you've feared, never comes to life.
Shadow of the Wind is a story with so many layers and underlayers, that I didn't even attempt to count it. Usually, I do not really like magical realism. The genre is not really defined for me. Not here not there, so to speak. But Carlos Ruiz Zafon is truly a master. I loved everything starting from the heroes that he created to his writing style (or what was left of it after translation). The story is a mystery, however that mentioned mystery is not really in the foreground. It is always lurking somewhere, but the heroes are not obsessed with it. They have their own life, they love, they get disappointed. They grow. And that is why I love this love this book.
