I liked it but my feelings are complicated
So I've gotten very into polyamorous/ “why choose” books recently. One of my reading groups recommended this series and I'm still deciding how I feel about this first book.
The bad:
This book is flawed. It definitely needs to be properly edited. It can feel disjointed and confusing with the way the scenes flow right into each other sometimes. There are also some plot points at the end that were pretty extreme for the character. That part lost me a bit. I can maybe justify the motivations by where the character's headspace was but it feels like a reach. It made me feel a little emotionally manipulated, so that's part of why I'm conflicted.
The good:
I really connected with the characters! Yes, I got frustrated with the need for an editor but that's mostly because of how good this book would be if it had been edited. I liked the way Peyton's background was handled. It wasn't over the top. It was just the reality of what she had to deal with at home.
The connections with each of the guys felt realistic to me. Each of them appeals to a different side of Peyton. I feel like they have distinct personalities and motivations, so the character development was really the strongest part of the book and we're still learning about them. There's also a bit of a mystery unfolding in the town and I'm intrigued by that.
On top of all this, it was really hard to put this book down! I read it in couple days because I still had to work or I would have finished it sooner. I'm going to continue with the series despite my mixed feelings. There's a lot to connect with here and I want to see where it goes!
