Francis Scott Key

Francis Scott Key

What American does not thrill to the powerful words of our own national anthem? As children we learn "The Star-Spangled Banner" which expresses our allegiance to our country; and we sing it many times throughout our lives. Yet what do we know of the man who gave us these inspiring words? Most of us know only a name -- Francis Scott Key. Most of us know that he wrote the words while being held prisoner aboard a ship on the Chesapeake Bay during the War of 1812. The sight of the American flag flying above a fort under prolonged attack provided the inspiration to Key. But there was much more to this man than the words to one song. As a child, Francis Scott Key learned the Bible. He grew to manhood with a strong Christian faith guiding his actions and thoughts. As you learn of the Life of Francis Scott Key, you begin to appreciate the fact that this man should be remembered for much more than writing the words to one song. The life of Francis Scott Key was lived in service to God. This story of Key is written as Key himself might have written it. Hopefully the reader may share his experiences in a more personal way. Francis Scott Key sowed seeds of faith to his family and friends all his life. The beauty of his words and the example of his Christian life allow us to appreciate him today. - Foreword.
