I loved this book so much and Edward A. Mendoza's narration was amazing!!
There were many instances that brought me back to my own childhood memories and upbringing while reading this and it made me like the characters and the story even more. From the humor down to the superstitious beliefs, the Filipino representation felt so natural—so unforced. I also loved how some parts of Filipino history were touched on.
This was such a fun read and a well-balanced story, I'm definitely going to buy a physical copy and read this again!
I bought this book because it won the Sid Fleischman Humor Award; perhaps my standards are too high but I was hugely disappointed. There was only one part that was actually funny to me and the writing was a bit choppy (this definitely would have benefited from an extra round of rewrites).
