Most of this book I loved, but funny enough not for the romance descriptions, although that was good too! Miles was so sweet to Daphne and it was obvious how much he cared for her. I loved the descriptions of the town and how Daphne was introduced to many aspects of it through Miles. Daphne's love for reading and her job at the library was so incredible to read, I could really see myself through her. Similarly, her relationship with her mom was beautiful and reminded me so much of my mom I was crying at parts. This book was as much as finding your place and discovering yourself as it was about the romance, and I really loved the character growth and development. Some parts dragged a little in the middle for me, so it's not a perfect read, but the beginning and ending of this were perfect!
3.85 ⭐️ I liked this one waaayyyy more than Happy Place. The romance was cute and the characters were tolerable, dare I say I was rooting for them. However, this was not a funny story. I was kinda expecting a romcom type situation but no, pretty normal Emily Henry romance. I also kinda thought it was little too long and dragged a bit in the middle. Overall though, my second favourite Emily Henry book 2 out of 4 ain't bad
okay so i remember when i read beach read and was OBSESSED!
then i read people we meet on vacation and it did not hit me right, so i was like hmmm never reading another emily henry book to not mess with the memory of beach read
however... i saw a quote from this on booktwt and decided to give it a shot
and now again im OBSESSED
I am so grateful I got the chance to read an eARC of this book thanks to PRH International.
Emily Henry does it AGAIN. This is my second favorite book of hers, the first place is held by Happy Place and I don't think there's going to be a better book than that one, but Funny Story came veeery close. I loved the characters, I loved the story, the feelings, the vibes, everything about this book was amazing.
Original reaction upon finishing the book: Her best yet - ten stars. Book of the year for me, I'm calling it now.
Full review:
Emily Henry has outdone herself with “Funny Story,” a heartfelt gem that is truly her best book yet. I inhaled this book in one sitting, propelled not only by the pitch perfect romance, but by the multitude of characters who all blossom beautifully by the final page.
Daphne, stung by a painful betrayal, finds solace in the quaint town of Waning Bay. There, she crosses paths with Miles, the enigmatic ex of her fiancé's childhood friend. What begins as an awkward fake-dating arrangement soon evolves into something deeper and far more meaningful.
Henry's talent for crafting realistic and relatable characters shines through. You'll cheer for Daphne as she rebuilds her life, laugh with Miles as he sheds his emotional armor, and feel warmly embraced by the circle of friends who surround them. The slow burn romance between Daphne and Miles is masterfully orchestrated, simmering with undeniable chemistry and emotional depth that makes their eventual connection all the more satisfying.
But “Funny Story” offers more than just swoon-worthy romance. It beautifully weaves in themes of enduring friendship and the power of found family. The relationships between Daphne, Julia, and Ashleigh are a testament to the unwavering support and love that can emerge from unexpected places. This multifaceted approach elevates the story beyond a typical romance, offering a richness and resonance that lingers long after the final page.
If you're searching for a witty, heartwarming story with characters who stay with you long after the last chapter, look no further than “Funny Story.” It's a delightful read that celebrates the joys of friendship, second chances, and finding love in the most unexpected places. Don't miss it!
Henry has this hyperbolic way of writing where everyone is as extreme as possible. It just seems lazy and produces flat characters. For instance, Peter: he has a huge house! his family is wealthy! he eats extremely healthy! etc etc. Do we ever really know what motivates Peter? Can we see someone we know in him? I don't think so, and that's just bad writing.
The story was cute but the actual reading was a slog.
Não entrou na lista de favoritos da Emily Henry, mas ainda assim um livro muito bom! Book Lovers continua a levar a taça
i am so sad that this is over but i am so thrilled that i got to read this early
This book was good, a perfect summer read. The chemistry between Daphne and Miles was to die for, the friendship and yearning was everything I was craving for. Even if their romance started in the wrong situation since they both were left by their fiance's, in the end they are able to overcome their differences and bond through their trauma and a weird yet beautiful friendship blooms.
These characters are not perfect there were moments that both of them made me mad but that's what made them feel real to me.
There were things that would have made this book so much better plot wise, that's why I don't fully give it a 5 star review.
But still I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a quick and lighthearted read, there's also a little trigger warning ⚠️ there's a shitty dad and a few abandonment issues with our main character but if it's something close home to someone I'll recommend to stay away from this book or just proceed with caution and know that our main character stood up for herself and she's better off without expecting something from him.
Okay. So. I don't want to drag a decent romance novel by a decent romance author. But I'm sick of it. Romance novels always follow this strict routine that I really don't get along with. I don't know WHY I KEEP READING CONTEMPORARY ROMANCES. You'll love this book if you eat up the average friends-to-lovers troupe. Some parts made me audibly cringe or sigh. Of course, I'm NOT in the target audience of basically any contemporary romances on BookTok, so I'm not surprised when I don't laugh at a joke meant for a straight 30 yr old woman. I'm a 16 yr old boy, I get it. Okay, since the negative parts are out the way here are some of the pros of this book
I'm not the target demographic here, and I don't know how I started reading her books, but I can't stop reading (listening to) anything Emily Henry puts out. The stories are always engaging and emotionally honest, dealing with tricky feelings that there doesn't seem to be an easy way out of. (And yet...) I started reading the print versions, but the audiobooks are even better because Julia Whelan is the perfect voice for Henry's text and characters. "Funny Story" is well-paced, not getting bogged down in its story, and is mostly successful in trying to turn Hallmark movie tropes on their heads. A great read. 4.5 stars.
Never have I squeed as much as I squmpt while reading this. It's just so good. Like I think I'm just in love with Emily Henry at this point. I loved Daphne just as much as I loved Miles. The way they saw each other and communicated was everything I'm looking for in a romance. When loving someone becomes this dance where the two partners are doing subconscious and conscious small things constantly to make the other's life easier or happier, it just sends me. I loved that Petra wasn't vilified by Daphne and she put all the blame on Peter, as she should. I loved Ashleigh and Harvey and all the little characters that showed up for Daphne. The effortless banter and witticisms sprinkled in Daphne's conversations with everyone, made me giggle the entire time. I'm still basking in the glow of the "funny story" call back, but that Miles lets Daphne tell it because she loves to. I genuinely have zero criticisms for this book. I'm just so sad it is over. I really didn't think she could top Book Lovers for me.
Funny Story is exactly what it promises: a light romance. My favorite part is the back-and-forth between the characters.
i wish she would stop talking about how this man smells.... like.... i get it, you get to smell this beautiful book-boyfriend but I DON'T so please stop talking about it!!!!
I wish I could give half stars here, because it was probably a 3.5.... I find it so difficult to rate books! so many parts of this were extremely enjoyable to me, and some parts were very.... not enjoyable, tbh. how do people just give books number ratings and FEEL CONFIDENT ABOUT THEM?!? I could never, honestly
Got really behind on my book list! So dating this dozen or so incorrectly as 12/31/24 and challenging myself to a sentence-long review. Maybe my 2nd favorite Emily Henry (just behind or tied with People We Meet on Vacation), with a cute premise and her extra sparkly dialogue.
We love an easy breezy romance novel, and I loved the characters! Emily is so good at writing banter and is witty. Fun to read!
I'm sorry... what? This cannot be the same Emily Henry I fell in love with months ago...
I was excited to read this based on the description, and that carried me about halfway through the book. Beyond that, everything really fell apart for me. Instead of letting the initial mischief flourish, there was a distinct point where everything just got...really boring. I'm actually kind of mad about it upon reflection. It's like I was repeatedly baited with some juicy drama and served stale leftovers.
The premise that Emily Henry sets us up with is great: a couple classic romance tropes and beautiful writing as always to set the scene. However, it slowly becomes a never-ending series of the characters getting into out-of-pocket, ultra-therapized monologues about their childhoods & current behaviors/patterns. I was constantly being bombarded with yapping that felt like I was sitting in on a psychoanalyst's summary of someone's last few years of sessions. The conflict was pointless, the tension was weak, the banter was awkward, and even though the ending is meant to be predictable, it was painfully so with hardly a blip between points A & Z. I'm sad and disappointed.
