I couldn't put it down, read it straight through in one night. Absolutely fantastic.
the movie sold this book so short, if you enjoyed the film the book is better.
I've seen the movie tons of times and thought it was very good. I enjoyed the book a lot, as well. Though I must admit, while I can and have watched the movie many times, I just don't think I'll be able to read the book more than once.
The one passage that made an impact on me was “Velocity vs Viscosity”
Kaysen did a well job in explaining the deconstruction of what's supposed to be a simple thought but how it goes down a rabbit hole.
That passage captured me because it's what I deal with every day. I've been on an active journey in trying to heal myself and this memoir brought up some really uncomfortable feelings.
The writing however in this book left me feeling detached. I thought some of the chapters didn't make sense and or the placement was off and the overall flow wasn't great.
If you read this book and just take it chapter by chapter, kind of like a short story collection other than something that's all supposed to match together it makes the reading experience much more enjoyable.
This book has a few ‘questionable' parts in it but overall I really liked it.
i say this about every book BUT literally one of the best written books i've ever read. I loved the way she integrated facts with her life and the storyline like the plot was always there, everything was flowing so nicely and beautifully told. 10/10 would read again.
read the entire book instead of finishing my final draft of an essay due tonight
The writing was gorgeous and the memoir portions were very realistic and similar to my own experiences, but I found the tone towards the end, in the portions written in present-day, off-putting. Also important to note that Kaysen's account is slightly outdated and, for the most part, does not reflect modern psychology.
