I did enjoy the character of Bobby and enjoyed learning more about her and more about life on Mars. Again, I'm glad I read this before [b:Nemesis Games 22886612 Nemesis Games (The Expanse #5) James S.A. Corey https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1407524221s/22886612.jpg 42456264].
It was a good story. Reminded me of how much I like the Bobbie Draper character. I hope she turns up again in a future Expanse novel.
4.50/5.00She was Una Meing for a moment, and he was Caz Pratihari, and the world was a heady, powerful, romantic place.
A suprisingly beautfiul and touching story of love doomed to fail. The fire of youthful emotions mixed with the wonder of Martian worldbuilding, Gods of Risk is one of the best short stories I have read. The story is so precise in developing martian culture and environment. It allows a main character to ruminate in this story, and be inspired to do better things. This is a powerful story. I liked this short story better than book 2!!
Executive Summary: There were parts I enjoyed more than others. I think I like the way they used the core of this as the basis for parts of the 4th season of the show more than the story itself. 3.5 starsAudiobook: I was never a huge fan of Jefferson Mays until he was unavailable for [b:Cibola Burn 18656030 Cibola Burn (The Expanse, #4) James S.A. They have since had him re-record that book, but not this novella. Mr. Davies is fine, but I'd rather they had Mr. Mays redo it. Maybe when the collection comes out they'll have him redo this one.Overall it's fine in audio, but nothing special.Full ReviewBobbie and Avasarala are my favorite Expanse characters. So it's kind of shocking I hadn't read this already. Any excuse to get extra Bobbie Draper, even if it was mostly in a cameo fashion should have been up on my list.Sadly though it mostly focuses on her teenage nephew, who kind of got on my nerves for most of the story. That was probably intentional, but it didn't help me love this book.I think they did a much better job with the seed for this story in the TV adaptation. That version was much more enjoyable to me. That said, I thought it was worth reading. You get some more glimpses of Mars than you have in most of the novels because the action has largely been happening elsewhere.
Liked this novella a lot. Follows Bobby Draper's young cousin as he gets sucked into the seedy underworld. Bobby has to bail him out at the end.
Working my way through these books after watching the series and this is the first thing I've read that is definitely much better done in the series. Unless there is more on the books to come. It is a pretty stereotypical story of a well-meaning good-hearted teenage boy being led astray by a broken hot teenage girl. Really expected more than these tired tropes from this series. It is made worse by the fact that it doesn't really do much to expand on the world-building.
“You're a tough guy, but I'm a nightmare wrapped in the apocalypse. And David is my beloved nephew. If you fuck with him after this, I will end every piece of you,” Bobbie said, her own smile sad. “No disrespect.”
Shit! You don't wanna fuck with auntie Bobbie. I love her, I was hoping to find more on her background but got an annoying, breaking-bad kinda nephew instead.
The Butcher of Anderson Station at least gave you some background, but this, I'm not sure what it does other than showing a grasp of how living on Mars is. Maybe something related to terraforming Mars in the future? Who knows?
A decent story but, plot-wise, you can totally skip it, if you ask me.
