“For a while, for as long as you're looking at it, that painting is the world and you get to be in it.”
This book was wonderful. I enjoyed reading it immensely and it reminded me that YA can still be great. I picked it up to try a chapter and I couldn't put it down after the first page. I want to go back and read it all over again. So my heart hasn't become a block of concrete, I just wasn't reading the right thing.
I don't usually go for reading about characters who are so passionate about art - paintings, drawings, glassblowing, graffiti. I can appreciate its beauty when I stubble come across it, but it's not something I go out of my way to research or get extremely passionate about. I'm more into music. However, the way the author described the characters' connection to these art-forms, I genuinely felt I understood it, I could see trough their eyes how important it was to them, it was a part of them just as much as breathing.
Lucy and Ed felt like real people, real young adults. They were flawed but so endearing at the same time. I felt for their struggles and I was overjoyed when some things would go well. There was so much chemistry between them I couldn't stop smiling throughout their journey. I also enjoyed the rest of the characters, especially Jazz, she was a fantastic best friend.
I was surprised to find so much humor, but I'm glad it happened. The comedic lines and moments, balanced nicely the heavier moments. I can't wait to pick up another book by this author.
