This book is a long, multigenerational tale narrated by a nameless woman, and it tells the story of persecution, oppression, and violence against the Taiwanese in the 20th century. For all it's fascinating political developments, I had a hard time connecting with the characters - especially the nameless, semi-omniscient narrator - and felt that this was a nonfiction book shrouded with fictional elements. While I think we were supposed to feel empathetic or sympathetic with the narrator, the writing was a wedge in that connection. I'm glad I read this, but it felt long and missed the emotional grip.
