This is exactly what I needed to get me out of my reading slump that I've been in for months... Even though this novel is set in a fictional world it seems so real with themes of anti-capitalism, institutional racism, and colonization. As a Canadian it was nice to actually enjoy a Canadian author and story lol The Gutter Child was fast paced and intriguing. As other reviews say on here, it does slow down towards the end but in my opinion it does not lose it's impact on the reader. It tells the story of how society is shaped to keep the poor in a cycle of poverty with no mobilization towards a better life well the so-called rich maintain status and prosperity. This is what I mean when I say it is powerful because even though it's fictional it has very real themes that play out in all societies across the world.
