Wow. Really...just wow. I didn't see any of this coming at all. In the first chapter or two, I figured I had a pretty good idea how the rest of the book will roll out, based on the first few books in this series. I could not have been more wrong if I tried.
I think I've underestimated Ms. Millhone and Ms. Grafton alike. Not that I've not appreciated the series, but the last two volumes...dang, great stuff.
I was really tired when I picked this book up and figured I'd just read a chapter or two before I went to sleep. The next thing I knew it was 2 am and I was over half way through the book. There is so much going on in this story. I only wish the ending was better. I mean, after the conclusion, it just seemed to thud to a close. It needed more of a wrap up. I would like to have known more of what happened for certain people or in certain cases etc.
I don't want to spoil anything but the very last line bothered me.
I did enjoy the book though and I feel like the stories are getting more elaborate and more thought out. The writing is better other than the large sections and extensive descriptions of things that don't seem to contribute much to the story (like buildings and things passed while driving). Some of the descriptive writing helps the reader to envision the time and place, especially if it is very different from where the reader is from but this book had a lot of “we went on this road, and then turned here and here.....past this (description) building and several others.... “ She could have taken some of that out and finishes the ending. Just sayin'...
