Hadji Murad by Leo Tolstoy was published posthumously in 1912. In the novella, Tolstoy presents the rather fictionalized version of the last days of the Chechen rebel leader Murad who defected from his ranks and joined Russian forces. Mistrusted by the Russian army for his past demeanours, his last heroic effort is presented as he tries to salvage his family. The work analyzes not only the Chechen-Russian Feud but also the death and destruction of wars.
