I haven't had so much fun with a novella in a long time – big robots, FIGHTING robots, junk planet, transhuman characters, and surprisingly enough, the romance was just at the right level. Excellent worldbuilding and character development made for a relatively quick read. I would love more work in this universe. First time Django Wexler purchase and I am NOT disappointed.
This originally appeared at The Irresponsible Reader as a part of a Quick Takes Catch-up post, emphasizing pithiness, not thoroughness.

This just seemed like a lot of fun when it was published last year, so when I saw it on the library site, I had to jump on it. And it was fun.
But it was a bit too short—I know that's by design, but it felt too abrupt. You got fighting robots on the cover, I want more than two major fights. Sure, the fights we get are pretty cool, but I wanted more.
If this was 20 percent longer, I'd have been happy. As it was? I was satisfied.

HARD REBOOT: Upon a second reading I have increased my rating by half a star. An excellent novella about finding love amidst giant fighting robots. Kas comes to Earth on a research trip to study old code, but quickly becomes entangled in a wager that becomes more than she bargained for. Overall it was a cute story with real stakes. I loved the mecha combat sequences! found myself wanting to know more about the universe of this book, and would love to read more set here. I found I got more from this story as an ebook than an audiobook, but that may be on me - not on the narrators.
