Mike was “stereotypical” Italian with the big family and the macho and very gendered roles. He was afraid to come out and be seen differently.

In comes Shane with his proud glory and feminine style. Always himself wherever he goes. Mike is envious of that but it causes rifts in his family because his father doesn't like “the gays” which is heart breaking to closeted Mike.
