So the booktok hype was real this time around.
REREAD 20/08-23:
Still as good as the first time around. Still lives up to the original hype. I now got the special edition in my collection, and I liked the extra novellas
I didn't expect to enjoy this alien romance as much I did! I was apprehensive because alien romances aren't my thing. And I've heard booktubers talk about the start of the book being really traumatic But I'm glad that I took the chance and pushed through. Georgie and Vektal's relationship was the perfect blend of sweet, spicy, and savory. The writitng was pretty good too, there were funny and sweet moments.
I'll definitely keep reading the series but not all 20+ books.
the start was jarring like we're thrown smack into it with her getting abducted and we learn she's been taken for what's basically sex trafficking and then we're shown someone getting raped. ok. not really glossed over but just weird were tone-wise considering the rest of the book feels fluffy :/
she gets captured in a trap by our alien MMC and wakes up to him eating her out and she's like ok he's fucking shit up purrrr! and let's him continue. idk this was a weird read. like it was kinda sweet and definitely insta-love but sorta with a reason? like it's insta-love on his end because he knows she's essentially his soulmate and so he's just so trusting of that fact and throws himself headfirst. she's a bit more reserved but can see that he hasn't done anything to hurt her and is protective so she's like why not!
overall i'd give this a 2.5/5, it's like not at all a serious read, was short, and was cute enough to keep me going. maybe even 3 stars?
Fucking horrendous. Quite literally the worst book i've ever had to read, doesn't even deserve 1 star. It felt like it was never going to end. The entire story was so inconsistent, like when mc literally kills a guy then at the end of the book she goes the only thing i've ever hurt was a spider, like ????????? The writing is so impossibly lazy and rushed, ofc why learn a language when u can just have it downloaded into your brain like that makes any sense at all??
Who does the mc think she is, shes so fucking annoying with her self absorbed bitching, who gave her the audacity. She literally says that she's not an alien to the main guy, like no you're the one who came from space and landed on THEIR planet you're the alien.
Also, the smut in it was absolutely awful every single time they had sex it was the exact same as the last, so boring and repetative.
Speaking of being repetative the author needs a fucking thesaurus, so many words and phrases were said over and over again, you do not need to say the mc is weak, fragile and soft EVERY GODAMN PAGE.
Don't even get me started on how problematic this shit was, the blatant rape was insane, but because they were aliens its ok???
Rant over, tbf some parts did make me chuckle but thats probably down to the fact i was quite literally going insane trying to finish this. I want to know who actually enjoys this and would like to book them into therapy.
3.5 Stars
k. so. i only read this right now because it was short and i wanted to round my year off on a nice even number. and honestly? this somehow isn't the worst thing i've ever read.
this isn't my first rodeo with monster romance however it is my first officially published one. i went in expecting trashy wattpad-style romance and ended up surprised at how not-trashy wattpad-style romance as i thought it was. very happy to say that ruby dixon can write better than most teenage girls on wattpad. (if only it weren't for those atrocious kindle covers lmao.)
tl;dr it wasn't awful and i have no major complaints.
i kinda do want to read more of the series tho. just for funsies. :)
Pre-Reading Updates:
all of my years reading momolady's monster romance stories should prepare me for this one.... i hope........
honestly i was prepared to give this 1 or 2 stars but i read it all in one sitting so i feel like it deserves 3 for keeping my attention.
When I first picked up “Ice Planet Barbarians,” I'll admit it was more for a laugh than anything else. The title alone promised a blend of sci-fi and smut that I expected to be more amusing than anything. However, what I found was a story that was surprisingly engaging and well-crafted.
The book takes us on a journey to a distant, icy planet, where the human protagonist finds herself in the company of towering, blue-skinned alien warriors. The initial premise may sound like standard science fiction erotica fare, but there's more depth here than meets the eye.
One of the book's strengths is its character development. The protagonists are well fleshed out, with personalities and backstories that add layers to the narrative. The alien characters, in particular, are intriguingly alien yet relatable, making their interactions with the human characters both exotic and believable.
The romantic and erotic elements of the story are, of course, central to its appeal. These scenes are written with a fiery intensity that captures the primal, passionate nature of the relationships developing amidst a harsh, unforgiving environment. However, what surprised me was the tenderness and care interwoven with the more steamy scenes, adding a level of emotional depth that is often missing in smut.
The plot itself, while straightforward, is engaging. It balances action, romance, and a bit of humor, keeping the pace brisk and the narrative interesting. The world-building is another highlight, with the alien planet rendered in vivid detail that immerses the reader in its icy, dangerous beauty.
Moreover, “Ice Planet Barbarians” touches on themes like survival, belonging, and the power of connection in the face of adversity. It's not just about the erotic encounters; it's also about finding love and companionship in the most unexpected places.
In conclusion, “Ice Planet Barbarians” turned out to be more than just a guilty pleasure read. It was a pleasantly surprising journey that combined steamy, passionate scenes with strong character development and a captivating storyline. For those who enjoy their romance novels with a side of interstellar adventure, this book is a surprisingly compelling read.
Was it worth the hype? Unsure.
Was it fun? Definitely.
Was it smutty? Not really. Based on what I heard from this book, it ended up being far more tame.
Quick, mindless, simple read if you're in a slump. Would recommend.
Such a fun read. This is my first foray into sci-fi romance and I can tell you know that I'm obsessed with this tribe already.
Possible spoilers?
I'm actually shocked with how much I enjoyed this book. I knew I would like it, but I'm used to these books being all about the smut, and while there is plenty of it - I felt totally captured by this story! I fell in love with Georgie and Vektal. He was such a sweetheart and her quick, witty comments made me laugh. I was rooting for them to be together from the get-go, and I only hoped for it even more as I kept reading.
There is a tough part in the beginning, so please be mindful of your triggers, but it does not carry throughout the storyline.
« “I'm not leaving you, sweet resonance.” »
« From now until my spirit departs this plane, there shall be none for me but her. »
« “Who did this to you?” and “Very well, little one.” »
