I don't know what I was expecting going into this but it definitely wasn't a woman trying to become a doctor in an age where that was not allowed. I was unaware that this was a second book when I requested the ARC but I was glad to finally get the first book off of my TBR! My biggest complaint about this book is the love triangle, but also that I didn't like either men? One of them seemed like he wanted nothing to do with her, and the other just seemed Too Perfect. He was very quick to be like “Yup! We can do whatever you want!” and I like a little more angst in my romances. Overall this book was just ok for me, not sure if it was the writting, the historical setting, or the fact that the main character continuously got everything she wanted without much struggle. I know this author has written a few other books including a YA contemporary and a memoir and I'd definitely check them out to see if I like them more!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press, Wednesday Books, and NetGalley for providing me with an eBook copy to review
Immortality is a sequel to Anatomy: A Love Story. In this book, there's more romance and more fantastical aspects. Since Hazel's arc was pretty much resolved in the first book, this is more focused on events that happen to her as she's trying to practice medicine and ends up getting pulled into the London society scenes and a secret society filled with historical figures.
To me, this read almost more like a full-length epilogue to Anatomy, filled with adventure. It was a fun read that was hard to put down.
Weird that I didn't mark this as read back when I had listened to it.
I recall liking it and enjoying the ending.
I will attempt a fuller review later.
I'm so happy to have been able to read this. I never would have known it exists unless I looked into it some more.
It reminded me of Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalo ever so slightly, with a fmc who fought against the bounds of society to become a medical professional.
I think I should thank Dana for Hazel, maybe she will teach me to not give up my dreams just yet. I just have to take an unconventional route to get to where I want, Mechanical Engineering in the UK and then apply to medical schools anywhere that would see me as a viable option.
But about the actual book, I'm so happy that it ended the way it did. I do wish that there could have been more, more for Jack and Hazel in the sense that they could undo the effects of the tincture but I guess we can't all have what we want. Now they will just live a happy, youthful life with each other until Hazel discovers the way to undo the tincture. They may have a different happy ending but it's one everyone can agree will lead to happiness.
