**4 ½ not full 5 because I wanted a little more, I'm greedy that way, sorry **
Another little gem from Jacob's POV and it's a double gift. This takes place about a year and a half before Maurice, Vic's former partner, retires. Jacob's relationship with Keith has just gone bust but the prospect of his first PsyCop meeting has him almost giddy.
Turns out to be a fateful date in which he gets his first look at Crash and his first look at Vic. Once again time and memory and the different courses our lives take come to the fore in this short but poignant piece. As usual seeing things from Jacob's point of view is refreshing, especially how he sees Vic even when he doesn't know him yet.
I would say that this is a piece that would not hold up as well as a solo story without knowing all that's gone before. Alternatively it could make someone curious as to who these people are. But really it works best as what it is: a look back at before it all began but knowing what we all now know.
I love these Jacob shorts. keeping fingers crossed for more
