I'll be honest; I straight-up hated this book at the beginning.
Prudence is not a likable character. She is judgmental, self-center (not to mention self-righteous), and I was extremely tempted to quit at just 30% because she honestly didn't have any redeeming qualities. I get not wanting a C on an assignment (I'd be a blubbering mess), but that doesn't excuse any of her behavior at all. Also, she was not a well-developed character. I'm struggling to remember anything about her hobbies or interests other than The Beatles. Making money, maybe? Prudence felt like a stuck up smart girl stereotype from a mid-2000s movie, and honestly, I thought we were way past that. I know, I know, she learns from the karma and starts to grow. However, I would have liked a lot more growth and an actual connection to the character. I didn't care about her throughout the book, and I still didn't at the end.
I liked the last 25% of the book best, but I could have saved myself some time since I knew how it would end about halfway through the book. I'm not saying every YA contemporary has to be groundbreaking, but it would be nice if it weren't so predictable.
This book was work to read, and I would not recommend it. At all.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Formulaic but cute. I read the beginning and the end and skipped most of the middle but didn't feel like I missed all that much. Lots of good information on marine conservation (which I totally can't read about because its too depressing right now).
THIS WAS SO GOOD !!!! [9/10 RATING] [Spoiler-Free Review]
This was SUCH a gorgeous ‘rivals to lovers' type romance novel. The novel was incredibly well written, with characters that I absolutely adored. Being an animal lover myself, I absolutely adored Quint !! I, too, along with Prudence, fell in love with Quint. I loved the way she slowly found herself falling for him, and how much character development she had throughout the novel. I remember grinning like mad while reading because of how much I shipped them. I love the premise of the novel, the characters, the plot, the character development and the writing. It was a super heartwarming read and I really loved it.
OVERALL: PLEASE READ IT. You will not regret it and end up finishing the book with the biggest grin on your face because the whole journey was amazing.
2nd read:

This was an audiobook, and I am not a fan of audiobooks. I'm willing to try this again as a regular book.
DNF @ 26% (3hr 40min in the audiobook).
I LOVE Marissa Meyer. She's one of my all time faves. But I could not get through this book. Maybe because I'm an adult and listening to a bratty 16 year old girl who is so self righteous.... Ugh I just couldn't. I wanted to slap Pru almost immediately. I hoped it would get better once the magical element was introduced, but it didn't, and I couldn't look past the MCs attitude.
