The first few chapters were quite confusing, having to piece together what's going on and trying to keep up with the events as well as the characters. It didn't make much sense until after Ch 16 for me, because it felt like I just had so many questions about the setting and these kids and how the heck they're living.
After getting through the first few chapters though, I was captivated. The writing style is engrossing and the more you read it, the more you don't want to put it down. The book got pretty heavy, which I didn't expect! I loved how all the characters were intertwined and how the pieces slowly unraveled. It felt so messy but it was somehow woven together so well that everything just made sense in the end.
This felt like a 3-star read in the beginning but after finishing it, this book deserves a 5. There were some parts that felt awkward but I loved it in its entirety. Definitely something that stays with you for a while after you finish reading it.
What a strange little book. I didn't know where this was going for a good while but I ended up invested in the characters by the end.
Update: No matter how many times I reread, I keep wanting to return.
Only book that's ever made me end crying. Now I'm wondering how I managed to put myself off it for so long.
I almost cried at the end.
This book made me very emotional. It's just so unfair, what happened to these beautiful people in their lives.
Too bad that the beginning was very confusing...
Awwweeeesommeee. A little slow/confusing/hard to get into at the beginning. But after around 100 pages, I couldn't put it down.
Okay this review is a liiiitle spoilery. So tread carefully if you have not read the book. Fair warning!
I like the way you kind of learn the backstory as Taylor does, hence the confusion at the beginning. Although, she tended to be a lot slower on the uptake. It was definitely predictable at times, but not overly so.
I loved the territory war stuff, especially when you find out how it started. Loved Jonah & Taylor's chemistry, and all their banter/fighting, and then as they let their guards down, how they protect each other.
It was heartbreakingly sad, especially once you figure out about fitz. I literally cried it was so sad. :( It felt so senseless. You almost wanted it to be a serial killer so you can have something to blame, someone to hate. It feels worse when it's just a simple accident. Like all the heartbreak and the sadness and the ruined lives could not have been because of something so small, so innocent. I felt so immensely sad for Fitz.
Anyway. Extremely well written and amazing book. I LOOOOOOVED this book. Best YA I've read in a long while!
