The life of Kalil Mtube, an eleven-year-old African boy, changes drastically when his father sells him and is forced to work as a slave on a cocoa plantation. There he finds friendship and love, but also the heartless cruelty of human beings. Even though he escapes, Kalil has to travel a long road to reach freedom.
