I wanted to give this zero stars or one. I hated how whiny and self pitting the protagonist was all the way through the book. Also it was way too predictable. Nonetheless the end (the last 2-3 hours of reading) still earned a star for actually being somewhat thrilling.
3.5 stars?
another one of Riley Sager's books where the ending saved it. this was sooo slow & really wasn't hooking me until the climax. who was involved didn't surprise me at all which was disappointing but what was actually going on definitely did & was super interesting.
I expected this to be a ghost story, but it turned out everything was just human' doings. (Spoiler: organ transplant black market)
This book succeeds in creating creepy atmosphere tho
Omg this book so wild!!! Not going to lie I almost cried while reading the last page. I can't recommend this book enough. Please read it!!!
Pretty good thriller with some fun turns in the back half. I don't think it'll really stick with me but I had a good time.
I read this literally within a few hours.
This book is widely considered as one of the weaker ones by the author and boy, am I excited to read the rest of his works! I would like to point out (unrelated to the plot and the content of the book) that I picked it up because I was told that people who like Ruth Ware's writing hate Riley Sager and vice versa. And being that I somewhat detest Ruth Ware's books, I was curious. After reading this book, I can confirm that the above mentioned belief seems to be true. :))
The story is set in a very prominent landmark New York building and from the very beginning I was really interested. Because the atmosphere was right, because the main character was likeable and vivid, because the author made this ridiculous situation somehow seem plausible. Because I have been poor and know the feeling of having just a few bucks in your pocket, and not knowing where to go and what to do, and felt entirely defeated. And I think the author managed to portray that brilliantly.
I really liked the twist and the resolution, though I have to admit that I found the villain slightly too villainy, and that took away a bit of the believability. Which is why the book gets 4 stars and not 5.
Wow! This is one of those books that I truly needed some time to digest before I could even begin my review. I kept hearing about this author, had yet to read one of his titles and am SO glad I did.
This book was a thrilling journey following Jules, a broke, newly single, heartbroken young woman who is struggling and truly down to her last bit of cash with no hopes for work in sight. When she responds to an ad for a job as an apartment sitter, the deal is too good to be true and she wonders how she managed to find such an incredible offer. A massive, beautiful apartment in the Bartholomew, a famous apartment building in Manhattan whose current residents are of elite status and incredibly wealthy. It also has a history and some truly disturbing stories to go along with it... and her new “job” consists of living in the apartment, with some major stipulations.
After befriending a fellow apartment sitter, the building's dark history starts to come out, leaving Jules scared and searching for answers. With the help of some curious residents and a search into the building's history, Jules is left with an even bigger fear... getting out alive.
This book was absolutely incredible and I did not want to put it down! Also left me researching the history of many similar buildings in the city (an interesting little research rabbit hole it has sent me down!) Can't recommend this book or author enough! The characters were so incredibly interesting, the history drew me in and Riley expertly kept me on the edge of my seat with his incredible writing and a deviously clever plot. I'll surely be back for more!!
Oh my gosh! THIS IS SO FREAKING GOOD! Its gripping, intense, suspenseful and it scared the hell out of me. For some reason, this gave me a similar vibe with the movie entitled, The Boy. What I absolutely love about this book is the different timelines which I thought the author have done such a good job. The writing is right up my alley and I dig it real hard. The twist literally gave me the chills and I've never have called it. I also found myself rooting for the main character the whole time even though she makes stupid decisions. The ending was so epic and I'm just satisfied on where and how it went. This is my first Riley Sager book and might as well check on his other works because I really love this one!
This was an interesting read. I was not expecting the twist at the end. Oh my goodness. It was a really quick read and if I hadn't read it interrupted, it probably would've only taken me 5-6 hours? So if you're looking for something small to dive into, I'd definitely give this one a go. Some of the narrative was repetitive with certain background pieces being repeated over and over throughout the book (e.g. the MC mentioning how much she needs the money and how broke she is). Overall though, it was a good read and I'd recommend it to someone who likes mystery/thrillers with light suspense.
3.5 stars - would've been 4 because i was hooked from the start but i hated the plot twist enough to drop the rating
.5 star added cause the twist was more welcome than what I thought was going on. Didn't love the mc though.
Almost a DNF but wanting to read the ending kept me going. The twist wasn't exactly what I expected but it didn't blow me out of the water. Characters were very flat, even the main character — her only personality trait was trauma. Glad the ending wrapped everything up though.
What a wild ride. So, I was fighting DNFing this book for the first 80%, the only thing that kept me going was that I was just too far in to give up. About 70% in when the “twist” was revealed I rolled my eyes so hard I saw my brain, but I kept going because I was so close to being done. Then the second twist happened at 80% in and I have never been so happy I didn't DNF a book. The ending was absolutely fantastic and right up my alley. It redeemed the entire book for me.
This book was an ok read. I enjoy the suspense, but I was able to guess a lot of the twist which took a little of the enjoyment away. If you can read it without trying to guess what’s gonna happen it will be a much more enjoyable read.
It would have been a great movie - and of course it's far-fetched as one. The main character in the book is almost unbelievable, because honestly she doesn't sound as smart or strong or strong-willed to do everything she does - and in a movie that could have been portrayed by the choice of the actress. Same with the background, because it seems like an effort to explain that her stubbornness comes from the fact she had lost her family, but I could see that happening in a screen.
Basically, as a book, as crazy as it sounds, it was just ok. So unbelievable I had to keep reading, but at the same time, nothing remarkable about it. But it has some Hollywood trait that jumps from the pages.
2.75
i looooved the first 60% of the book and the atmosphere it had but sadly when the plot twist started to unravel i lost my interest. its not my favourite kind of a plot twist and i found it just a bit ridiciulous and it ruined the fun for me. also its my second riley sager book where i loved the set up and didnt love the plot twist/ending so yeah, dont know if im going to be reading more from him.
Lonely broke orphan girl just lost her job and her awful boyfriend. Desperate and mostly alone, except for her best friend, she accepts a job as a temporary tenant at a famously posh and exclusive apartment building. Then people go missing, people act sinister, Satan is a red herring, and evil doctors happen.
I appreciate the down with the 1% message, but like most thrillers, things get silly. That being said, I enjoyed this mote than most thrillers because it has a fun, more PG-rated “Eyes Wide Shut” rich-people-are-evil vibe. It could honestly have been more shocking though. I was actually disappointed the twist was as mundane add it was. I expected more. But then, I do horror, and–whilst this has some commonalities with horror–it IS a thriller. That being said, this was also more fun than I thought it would be.
Also...if a Sager heroine bones someone, that someone is the main villain.
