While this isn't a complicated story, I love the structure: The protagonist is writing a confession that his daughter is to read in the future about a mistake in judgment he made. It's the “trouble” that starts off the book, and then the stakes continue to rise from there, which makes the reader keep turning the pages. What are the consequences, the reader wants to know, and so we keep reading.
