Volume three of Lucifer finds Carey really hitting his stride. Finishing off the storyline from Volume 2, where a Lucifer stripped of his powers must fight Amenadiel, Carey then takes us on a quest to recover the soul of the child half-angel, Elaine Belloc, while God exits this creation and appoints Lucifer and Michael as joint replacements.

With superb artwork from Peter Cross and Ryan Kelly, as well as various guest artists, this is a Vertigo comic book at its very best. Carey has taken Gaiman's take on Lucifer and made it his own, making the fallen angel a truly complex character. Exploring themes of loyalty, self-determination and the very nature of creation itself, this is a mature and involving work from a writer at the peak of his powers.
