Terrible. Relying on virtually every fantasy trope available, this is the most pointlessly formulaic book I've ever read. The phrase, “Don't waste your time,” seems tailor-made for this tome.
Loved: I enjoyed the very clear hero's journey.
Meh: Ignoring the middle children! As usual!
What Will Stick: Your gut knows. It knows more about you than YOU know about you. Remember this!!!

My friend persuaded me to start reading this series... and I loved it! Even though there was barely a mention of Septimus Heap in the story except for the beginning and the end, it seemed to revolve around him. The ending was a great surprise (that I had been expecting all along) and definitely lived up to my expectations, and I can't wait to read [b:Flyte 355917 Flyte (Septimus Heap, #2) Angie Sage http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1255925109s/355917.jpg 3245408]. The only cons about this book are its loose ties to the series name, Septimus Heap.
Fun read for those that like stories involving magical worlds and wizards. I didn't feel invested in the characters by the end, though, so will probably not continue the series.
This was one of the sweetest stories I have read in a long time. A proper fairy tale fantasy and it had a dragon, a lost princess who is practical and not prissy and the magykal seventh son of a seventh son.
I will be reading the rest of the series very soon.
a little too juvenile for me, not exactly E for everyone meaning adults may have a hard time enjoying this
I really liked it. Quite different from what I expected. I really liked the characters and the interesting world they lived in. I was surprised it took so long to find out who Septimus really was, but I could tell who it was going to be right away. After a certain point I figured that reveal was going to be at the end.
This is another book that I read aloud to my daughter but would not have finished otherwise. I am mystified by the plethora of good reviews for this one. The story is tired and scattershot; the so-called main character is largely missing; it's far longer than it needs to be; all the magic is of the deus ex machina variety; the writing style is by turns condescending, obtrusive, and dull; and the plot is hard to discern. Even with all that said, I've read (or attempted to read) others that were worse. My best indicator of how well it was received by my daughter is if she asks to immediately get to the next one in the series or not. She did not ask about this one (and if she did, there's no way I would've read it). This book held no surprises, moved at a snail's pace, and contained only cardboard characters. Next up will be a book of my choosing.
Awalnya agak skeptis sm seri ini. Ak mulai mempertanyakan apa ak udh kehilangan minat pd genre children ataupun middle grade krn kekecewaanku pd seri percy jackson & fablehaven yg menurutku membosankan. Tapi Septimus Heap ini membuktikan klo genre children bisa sebagus & seseru Harry Potter, tergantung authornya ternyata. Dan ak mmg bkn fans om rick ataupun om brandon.
Saking sukanya sm buku ini sampe bingung bikin reviewnya. Rahasia terbuka di bab akhir & diramu dgn sangat manis bagaimana septimus & keluarganya saling menemukan. Semangat baca kelanjutannya...
Inventive YA book about a different type of magic from what you may be familiar with from Harry Potter. The creativity is slightly offset by the uninteresting antagonist.
Age range: 10-14
Younger readers may be daunted by the length, and older readers may get bored.
