DNF at page 178. While the story itself is intriguing, it was much too depressing for me, so I didn't finish it. :(
My 1 star rating is NOT about the quality of the book, it is ONLY about personal taste.
I listened to the audiobook version of this novel, so my review is likely influenced by the persona the voice actor took on when reading the book. Generally, I think his performance made the book better for me than if I had picked it up to read: the voice actor attempted to give a completely one-dimensional protagonist, about whom we don't know enough to care one way or the other, a teeny bit of personality. We don't know why he is the way he is; we don't know what prompted him to invent a time machine; we sort of figure out the climate change has made NYC uninhabitable. But all the characters, with maybe the exception of Phil, are just ideas of people, rather than real people. Unimpressed.
