Kara Gillian is a detective. She is also a summoner. She can summon demons to this realm. Everything is going great for her, until she somehow summons a Demon Lord instead of a lower level demon. This happens about the same time she finally gets to be lead on a murder investigation. Coincidence? Or are the two somehow tied together? I really enjoyed this book. Kara is a likable character. I'm a big fan of the White Trash Zombie series, so I decided to give this series a try. Diana Rowland does not disappoint in this series either.
Mark of the Demon is is a sort of cross genera story combining crime-detective with urban fantasy. There is also a dollop of romance there. Quite a good story. Demons and a serial killer and a tough lady cop make an interesting combination.
Great mix of procedural and urban fantasy. Perhaps a little heavier on the fantasy than it needed to be, but that's not really a knock. Some interesting characters–some that need a lot more fleshing out in future installments–a heckuva magic system, a great world, good locale in that world and a strong protagonist. Pretty much all you can want.
I really, really, really didn't need the level of detail Rowland gives about the relations between Kara and the demon. That aside, a heckuva read.
Looking forward to more.
