There are 3 parts to this book, I sort of liked the third one.
The best way to read this book is to go back in time and arrange for your grandparents to be born and raised in Soviet Russia. Time it so that you become an adult in Soviet Russia in the 1960's.
I don't mean just visit Russia in the 60's, I mean you have to be a Russian.
It is likely then that a lot of this book will make sense to you.

If you can't arrange this, maybe borrow the book from your library and just read the third part.
The easiest thing is just to skip reading it, the third part was interesting but not that great.
