A powerful, eerily unsettling story collection from a major international literary star.
The brilliant stories in Mouthful of Birds burrow their way into your psyche and don't let go. Samanta Schweblin haunts and mesmerizes in this extraordinary collection featuring women on the edge, men turned upside down, the natural world at odds with reality. We think life is one way, but often, it's not -- our expectations for how people act, love, fear can all be upended. Each character in Mouthful of Birds must contend with the unexpected, whether a family coming apart at the seams or a child transforming or a ghostly hellscape or a murder.
Schweblin's stories have the feel of a sleepless night, where every shadow and bump in the dark take on huge implications, leaving your pulse racing, and the line between the real and the strange blurs.

Ah, I am seriously afraid that this will be the best thing I've read in 2019 and here it is, January. These stories are incredible. Some of them I will be thinking about for YEARS. After reading Headlights, I immediately ran into the other room and read it, again, aloud to my 19 year old daughter. After I finished, we just sat in stunned silence together...and then talked about it for an hour. So very good! I guess I have to read [b:Fever Dream 30763882 Fever Dream Samanta Schweblin https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1471279721s/30763882.jpg 42701168]now. I read this slowly over almost two weeks, letting one story settle before I started the next. My favorites (note to self for rereading): Headlights, The Digger, Toward Happy Civilization, OlingrisBut, really, they are all wonderful. I haven't been this excited about a short story collection since I discovered Judy Budnitz and George Saunders. Excellent.
