Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for this arc. This is the first book in a new series that is a spinoff of another series. I have not read the previous books and was very confused at certain parts in this story and by the end I didn't really care who did what or how. I have no interest in reading the previous books.
I just finished Murder at Haven's rock by Kelley Armstrong and here are my thoughts.
Haven's rock is supposed to be the kind of town people can run to so they can disappear. To start a new life away from danger. Haven's rock isn't the first town built for this purpose. Detective Casey Duncan and her Husband Eric Dalton know how things should be run and what to do.
The only rule for being there? Stay out of the forest. The town is built in the most remote region for a reason. When two of the crew members go missing, Casey and Eric have to come in and figure out what happened. When a body is found with evidence of foul play, Caset and Eric have to discover what happened to the dead woman while looking for the other missing crew member.
There is someone in the forest that is very dangerous and the longer they are free, the more danger everyone is in.
I love this author, so when I discovered that this is a new series for her, I was all in. First off this is a spin off from another of her series which I haven't read. I thought it wouldn't matter but I felt like I was missing something for the first half of the book. It felt like I was wearing the wrong shoes if that makes sense. I finally felt like I found my footing just over the halfway point and really got into the story.
I really like Casey. She is strong and dependable and I can see why a spin off was done with her and Eric. I felt Eric didn't get as much air time as she did and I am hoping that changes in book 2. I love the idea of a place where people can disappear to where they will be safe and can build a new life.
I thought the pretext of the book was great. I loved the murder mystery. It was really well done and I didn't guess who did what. I love that it was so up in the air that it literally could have been anyone. I am definitely looking forward to book 2!
4 stars.
